ADEA welcomed a new leadership slate at the 2013 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition held March 16-19, in Seattle, Washington. A complete list of all members of the ADEA Board of Directors is available on the ADEA website.

Stephen K. Young, D.D.S., M.S., was installed as the new Chair of the Board. Dr. Young has spent 36 years on the faculty of the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, and has been its Dean for the last 12 years. He has taught dental, allied, and graduate students; chaired the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology; and served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

“I extend my congratulations to Dr. Young,” says ADEA Immediate Past Chair of the Board, Gerald N. Glickman, D.D.S., M.S., M.B.A., J.D. “His dedication to the future of dental education has been evident in his career. ADEA and the academic dental community will be well served by his leadership.”

From 2009-11, Dr. Young served as Chair of the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI), which builds consensus among all stakeholders in dental education, research, and practice by providing leadership to a systemic, collaborative, and continuous process of innovative change in the education of general dentists. He previously served as an ADEA representative to the Joint Commission on Dental National Examinations and American Dental Association Council on Dental Education and Licensure, also serving both groups as Chair.

Dr. Young will serve as Chair of the Board during the  2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition , taking place March 15-18, in San Antonio, Texas. The theme of the meeting, The Science of Learning, underscores how the brain works, how people learn, and the most effective ways to teach. “I have become convinced that the key to successful change in dental education is faculty development,” Dr. Young says. “ADEA has played a critical role in my academic development and career. As Chair of the Board, I will strive to bring the rewarding experiences I have had to a new generation of dental, allied, and advanced program faculty members.”

Dr. Young holds a D.D.S. degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry, and an M.S. degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

ADEA also installed Lily T. Garcia, D.D.S., M.S., FACP, as Chair-elect of the Board at the 2013 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition.

“As Chair-elect of the Board of ADEA, I will advocate the need to assess and reassess our educational processes and envision a proactive view in the development of the next generation of clinicians, scientists, academicians, and community leaders,” says Dr. Garcia. “The future of dental education is in the hands of ADEA members since it is their responsibility to help translate the vision of change and innovation into the reality of education. If in the midst of day-to-day activities, we can help faculty and students navigate educational processes, they themselves will step into leadership roles that improve ADEA’s efforts in addressing the oral health of our diverse population.”

Dr. Garcia is currently the Director of the Division of Advanced Education and External Affairs in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. Previously, she taught at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry, where she became the Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry.

Between 2008 and 2011, Dr. Garcia served on the ADEA Board of Directors as Vice President for Sections. She was the recipient of an ADEA Presidential Citation at the 2011 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition. A Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, Dr. Garcia is also a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), the Academy of Prosthodontics, and the American College of Dentists. She is the Immediate Past President of the ACP and former Chair of the Council for the American Board of Prosthodontics.

Dr. Garcia holds a D.D.S. from Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas, and an M.S. in Prosthodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She received the University of Colorado Health Science Center President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the Educator of the Year award from the American College of Prosthodontists in 2004.

After spending one year as ADEA Chair-elect of the Board, Dr. Garcia will become Chair of the Board at the conclusion of the  2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition  in San Antonio, Texas, taking place March 15-18, 2014.
