Dr. Michael Han Awarded Osteo Science Foundation’s Philip J. Boyne Research Award

Michael Han, D.D.S., FACS, of the UIC COD Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was awarded the Osteo Science Foundation's Philip J. Boyne Research Award for his research on the use of near-infrared multispectral imaging to investigate the role of soft tissue flap perfusion on outcomes of hard tissue regeneration in the jaws. This will be the first reported use of near-infrared multispectral imaging in the oral cavity and in the maxillofacial region. Department of Orthodontics Raises Awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October was National Breast Awareness Month and the UIC COD Department of Orthodontics helped raise awareness by decorating their clinic pink and wearing pink PPE. They also encouraged patients to pick pink ligature ties and elastics as well as wear pink for their ortho visit.

The initiative was kick-started in 2016 by ortho graduate John Polivka, whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer while he was a resident. The Ortho Department is proud to keep the tradition going years later.

The Effect of Smoking and Brushing on the Color Stability and Stainability of Different CAD/CAM Restorative Materials

Stuart Schelkopf, D.D.S., M.S., FACP, (Class of 2014), Judy Chia-Chun Yuan, D.D.S., M.S., and Cortino Sukotjo, D.D.S., Ph.D., (Class of 2017), faculty members at the College of Dentistry, Department of Restorative Dentistry, and their collaborators published a research paper in the journal Materials entitled The Effect of Smoking and Brushing on the Color Stability and Stainability of Different CAD/CAM Restorative Materials.

This study investigated and compared the color stability and stainability of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) restorative materials in their glazed (G) and polished (P) state when exposed to cigarette smoke, as well as after brushing. The exposure to cigarette smoke showed that lithium disilicate, zirconia, and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) are all susceptible to staining but brushing decreases surface staining.
