Receives Penn Dental Medicine’s 2013 Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching
Eric T. Stoopler, D.M.D., Associate Professor of Oral
Medicine at University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (Penn Dental
Medicine), has been recognized for his excellence in teaching as a 2013
recipient of the University of Pennsylvania’s Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback
Foundation Awards for Distinguished Teaching.
Dr. Stoopler has been part of Penn Dental Medicine’s
faculty since 2002, starting as Assistant Professor of Oral Medicine and
promoted to Associate Professor of Oral Medicine in 2011. Since 2007, he has
served as Director of the School’s Oral Medicine Residency Program. In
addition, he directs the oral medicine externship program at the Hospital of
the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and he is on the medical staff at HUP,
Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dr. Stoopler’s many teaching roles at Penn Dental
Medicine include Course Director for Principles of Medicine, the oral medicine
core curriculum for Graduate Dental Education, the Vernon J. Brightman Conference
Series, and the Advanced Clinical Oral Medicine Selective. He is also a
lecturer in 10 other courses at the pre- and postdoctoral levels.
Call for Nominations: ADA Norton M. Ross Award
Dental Association (ADA) has issued a call for nominations for the 2014 Norton
M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. This award, established in
1991, is presented annually in memory of Dr. Norton M. Ross, a dentist and
pharmacologist who spent most of his career in academic and research positions.
Dr. Ross elevated clinical research to a higher level of scientific standards,
and his contributions to the fields of oral medicine and dental clinical
research have had a positive and lasting influence on the public’s oral health.

Dr. William Dodge Named Dean of the Dental School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
President William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, announced that William W. Dodge, D.D.S., has been named Dean of the Dental School, effective April 1, 2013.
Dr. Dodge has been serving as Dean Ad Interim since June 2012 while former Dean Kenneth L. Kalkwarf, D.D.S., M.S., served as President Ad Interim during Dr. Henrich’s leave. Dr. Kalkwarf, who served as Dean of the Dental School for 24 years, is serving as Special Assistant to the President and plans to retire this summer.
“Dr. Dodge successfully led the Health Science Center’s Dental School as Dean Ad Interim,” says Dr. Henrich. “Prior to that, he served as Vice Dean of the Dental School since 2004 and Associate Dean for Patient Care from 1996 through 2003. He joined the Health Science Center in 1978 after five years as a successful general dentist in San Antonio and two years as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps.”
Dr. Dodge holds the rank of Professor with tenure in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry. He received his B.S. in Biology at Trinity University in San Antonio and his D.D.S. at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
“Dr. Dodge is highly regarded by his colleagues in academic dentistry throughout the nation for his expertise in matters of accreditation of dental programs, competency assessment, evidence-based clinical education and financing of dental education. Dr. Dodge’s goal, shared by me and the faculty, is that the school be regarded as the finest dental school in our country," says President Henrich.
“His leadership and vision, most notably regarding the school’s clinical endeavors, helped the Dental School to be awarded Permanent University Funding to build a state-of-the-art Center for Oral Health Care & Research which will open next to the Medical Arts & Research Center in 2015. I have complete confidence that Dr. Dodge will lead the school in an exemplary manner in the years to come,” adds Dr. Henrich.
A major project for Dr. Dodge will be opening the new $95 million Center for Oral Health Care & Research. The 198,000-square-foot center will house all clinical training and patient care for the Dental School. The building will facilitate clinical research trials, which can generate advancements in innovation and patient care.
UTHealth School of Dentistry Welcomes
The University of Texas Health
Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry welcomed several new
faculty members this spring.
Karen F. Novak, D.D.S., M.S.,
Ph.D., has been named Associate Dean for Professional Development and Faculty
Affairs at UTHealth. Dr. Novak joins the UTHealth School of Dentistry from ADEA
where she served as Senior Director for Research and Analysis and Senior Vice President
for Institutional Capacity Building. She has also held positions in academic
leadership, including Director of Predoctoral Periodontics and Associate Director
of Student Services, both at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental
Medicine; and Director of Graduate Studies and Interim Associate Dean for
Academic Affairs, both at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.
She has also practiced
privately and as part of an academic faculty practice. Her research focuses on
biofilms and periodontal disease and oral-systemic and inflammatory connections
of disease. She has been involved in numerous grant awards from National
Institutes of Health/NIDCR, Department the Army, HRSA, NIA, and various
university-level funding sources.
In addition to the role as
associate dean for Professional Development & Faculty Affairs, Novak will
serve as a professor in the Department of Periodontics & Dental Hygiene at
R. Badger, D.D.S., M.S., is the new Chair of the Department of Pediatric
Dentistry at UTHealth School of Dentistry. Dr. Badger, a U.S. Army veteran, has
been on the UTHealth School of Dentistry faculty since 2008 as a volunteer,
teaching in the pediatric dentistry residency program while maintaining a
private practice in College Station, Texas. He became a full-time faculty
member in November 2012.
serving in the military, Dr. Badger held several academic faculty appointments
at dental schools in Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland. He is a Diplomate
of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a member of the American
Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as the Pierre Fauchard Academy and
Delta Sigma Delta. He is also a fellow of the American College of Dentists and
the International College of Dentistry.
U. Ogbureke, B.D.S., M.Sc., D.M.Sc., J.D., has been appointed the new Chair of
the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences at UTHealth School of
Dentistry. Dr. Ogbureke joins the UTHealth School of Dentistry from Georgia
Regents University College of Dental Medicine where he held a tenured position.
He is certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and
the American Board of Medical Malpractice. He is also a fellow of the American
College of Legal Medicine and serves on the Board of Examiners of the American
Board of Medical Malpractice.

E. Mahoney Fellowship Program for Health Professional and Health Policy
New York Academy of Medicine is accepting applications for the Margaret E. Mahoney Fellowship Program
for Health Professional and Health Policy Students . These Fellowships will provide
stipends to support outstanding medical, dental, nursing, public health, and
public policy students wishing to participate in 8- to 10-week research and
action programs and policy projects addressing the health needs of vulnerable
urban populations. The application

projects will focus on transforming health care delivery systems and improving
access to high-quality, cost-effective care, including preventive services, for
low-income, uninsured, and minority urban populations, and/or early childhood
health and development. The Fellowship program will also include several
leadership sessions throughout the Fellowship period. Fellows will participate
in a culminating event at which they will provide an oral presentation of their
project, and will also be required to submit a written report within three
months after the Fellowship period. On successfully completing the Fellowship,
the students will join a Margaret Mahoney Fellows Alumni Association and will
continue to be offered unique opportunities for career development.

NYUCD’s Juhee Jeong is Selected by
American Association of Anatomists for its 2013 YAPA Award
York University College of Dentistry’s (NYUCD) Juhee Jeong, Ph.D., an Assistant
Professor of Basic Science and Craniofacial Biology, will be awarded the
American Association of Anatomists’ (AAA) 2013 Keith and Marion Moore Young
Anatomist’s Publication Award (YAPA) at the annual AAA Awards Banquet in
Boston. The YAPA was created to recognize the best publication by a young
anatomist in one of the society’s journals—The
Anatomical Record, Anatomical Sciences Education, or Developmental Dynamics.
Jeong was selected for the 2013 YAPA for her paper, “Cleft Palate Defect of
Dlx1/2-/- Mutant Mice Is Caused by Lack of Vertical Outgrowth in the Posterior
Palate,” published in Developmental
Dynamics (September 2012).
strength of the paper lies in its thorough analysis,” Jeong says. “We found
novel connections between the Dlx genes and many other genes that had been
known to be important for palate formation.”
Jeong and her team investigated the etiology underlying cleft palate of mouse
mutants in which Dlx1 and Dlx2 genes were inactivated. They found that the
posterior palate failed to grow in these mutants from the onset of
palatogenesis. Additionally, cell proliferation rate and Cyclin D1 expression
were reduced in the mutant posterior palate, and the expression of multiple
known regulators of palatogenesis was affected in the mutants. The team concluded
that Dlx1 and Dlx2 are crucial for early stages of palatogenesis.
Jeong is a developmental biologist at NYUCD, striving to understand the
mechanisms by which cells acquire positional identity within embryonic tissue
and thereby develop into a specific part of an organ. In particular, she is
investigating the molecular genetic mechanisms behind craniofacial
morphogenesis with emphasis on transcriptional regulation. Her laboratory
utilizes multidisciplinary approaches including mouse genetics, genomics,
biochemistry, and molecular biology.
