Thanks to concerns raised by ADEA, the American Dental Association (ADA), and other oral health organizations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reversed its decision to downgrade the Division of Oral Health (DOH). On January 14, 2011, ADEA Executive Director Richard W. Valachovic wrote to CDC Director Thomas Frieden and stated that “we strongly believe that DOH’s role should be preserved and the division should not be placed under the Division of Adult and Community Health where the issue of oral health care will have to compete with other pressing health issues.”

ADA Seeking Faculty Volunteers for Developing Tanzanian Curriculum

The American Dental Association (ADA), in cooperation with Health Volunteers Overseas, is assisting dental faculty at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in developing programs to provide chair-side instruction and lectures to undergraduate and advanced dental education students, as well as continuing education for the faculty.

Delta Dental Grant Supports IU Sealant Program for Underserved Children

The Delta Dental Foundation has given the Indiana University (IU) School of Dentistry a $50,000 grant to operate the university’s Seal Indiana mobile program. The initiative brings vital preventative dental care to Indiana children in key underserved areas while enabling dental students to help alleviate disparities in access to healthcare. Gifts from the foundation to the school now total $250,000.
