Dr. Hiroe Ohyama Named Associate Editor of the Journal of Dental Education
Sept. 9, 2024—The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) has named Hiroe Ohyama, D.D.S., D.M.D., M.Sc., Ph.D., as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Dental Education (JDE).
Dr. Ohyama is an Associate Professor and the Director of Operative Dentistry at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM). She is a former fellow of the Harvard Medical School Academy in Medical Education and a 2024 graduate of the ADEA Leadership Institute. Dr. Ohyama earned her D.D.S. from Tohoku University School of Dentistry in Japan. After graduation, she completed clinical and research training at HSDM, where she obtained both a certificate in general dentistry and an M.M.Sc. degree. She then returned to Japan to pursue a Ph.D. in oral biology from Tokyo University Faculty of Medicine.
Dr. Ohyama joined the faculty of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences at HSDM in 2000, where she discovered a passion for teaching alongside her research endeavors. Her passion led her to pursue a D.M.D. at HSDM. This enhanced her ability to educate future dental professionals with a deeper understanding of the dental curriculum in the United States, further advancing her career as a dental educator.
“Dr. Hiroe Ohyama’s exceptional journey and global perspective from Tohoku, Tokyo, and Harvard universities is marked by pioneering research and teaching excellence, reflecting her profound dedication to advancing restorative dentistry,” said Michael S. Reddy, D.M.D., D.M.Sc., Editor of the JDE.
“As an Associate Editor for JDE, her rich expertise and innovative vision will undoubtedly elevate the journal by bridging cutting-edge research with transformative clinical education practice.”
Dr. Ohyama has made substantial contributions to student-centered scholarly activities, with nearly 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Her research frequently involves collaboration with talented students and colleagues, particularly in student- and resident-led projects within dental education and clinical dentistry. One of her key research interests is dental students’ self-assessment, where she investigates factors influencing students’ self-assessment abilities and their performance. Dr. Ohyama believes that understanding these factors is crucial for developing early, personalized interventions for students, especially those who are underperforming.
“Dr. Ohyama has been an excellent reviewer and frequent publisher in the JDE for some time now,” said Romesh P. Nalliah, D.D.S., M.H.C.M., Associate Editor of the JDE. “Her cheerful smile brought many laughs to the JDE Editorial Board when she served on it and we are excited to welcome her as the second Associate Editor to JDE. Since 2019, submissions to JDE have almost doubled, and adding another Associate Editor is a terrific sign of growth and expansion of the popularity and influence of the JDE.”
Dr. Ohyama is a dedicated educator and an accomplished clinician-scientist, serving as a role model in both domains. She has received numerous awards for her excellence in research, teaching, and patient care, including the HSDM Distinguished Junior Faculty Award, the HSDM Outstanding Faculty Award, and the Excellence in Cosmetic Dentistry Award.
Her contributions have also been recognized nationally and internationally, with invitations to present at the ADEA eLearn Webinar series and to deliver keynote addresses at various dental and medical conferences. Among her many accolades, Dr. Ohyama is the recipient of the ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Excellent Teaching Award, the ADEA Project Pool Grant, and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Stephen H. Leeper Teaching Award.
