Since its founding in 1897, nestled in the rural landscape of Harrogate, TN, the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) has been a beacon of educational opportunity. Created as a living memorial to President Abraham Lincoln, LMU’s mission has always centered on serving underserved populations—a commitment that has only strengthened over time.

Over the past two decades, LMU has developed multiple professional studies programs aimed at addressing critical shortages in health care access, particularly in the Appalachia region. Among these initiatives is the Lincoln Memorial University College of Dental Medicine (LMU CDM), which has become a cornerstone of the university’s efforts to bridge the gap in oral health care.

Located at the LMU Tower in Knoxville, TN, LMU CDM offers a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (D.M.D.) degree program and an Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene (D.H.) degree program.

Recently, the student dental clinic opened its doors to new patients, marking a significant milestone for LMU CDM programs. At this clinic, predoctoral dental and hygiene students perform dental procedures under the supervision of experienced and licensed faculty dentists.

LMU CDM’s impact extends far beyond the walls of its clinic. The college is heavily involved in community service, particularly through collaborations with local schools and other organizations. One such partnership is with The 865 Academies, an initiative by Knox County Schools designed to offer high school students a career-themed education. Through this program, LMU CDM students and faculty regularly provide oral health education, and high school students are given the opportunity to shadow professionals at LMU CDM, gaining practical experience in the dental professions.

Additionally, LMU CDM collaborates with the Boys and Girls Club of America during spring break, offering high school students a three-day workshop focused on dentistry and forensics. The goal of this partnership is to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment where critical thinking, creativity and professionalism are at the forefront.

LMU CDM’s dedication to serving underserved populations continues with its involvement in the Appalachian Miles for Smiles mobile unit. This partnership brings complimentary dental services to remote areas of east Tennessee and southwest Virginia, reaching those who struggle to access affordable care. Faculty, staff and students volunteer their time and expertise, ensuring that communities receive essential oral health care.

LMU CDM also partners with the Elgin Children’s Foundation and the Clinch Powell Educational Cooperative to provide routine screenings and oral health education to Head Start and elementary schools across east Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. Children identified with urgent dental needs are transported weekly to the LMU Tower, where they receive comprehensive treatments, including prophylaxis and restorative care.

Through these efforts, LMU CDM continues to honor the legacy of President Lincoln by serving communities and transforming lives one patient and one student at a time. For more information about LMU CDM, contact the program at CollegeofDentalMedicine@LMUnet.edu.
