Fayetteville Technical Community College Dental Hygiene Receives Two Donations to Enhance Student Resources

The Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) Dental Hygiene Program has recently been the beneficiary of two significant donations to enhance the resources available to students.

A generous donation by Lewis Family Dentistry, which has served the Fayetteville, NC, area for over 30 years, funded the purchase of 27 typodont models. These models are crucial for students’ education and preparation for their board exams.

In another significant contribution, the Price family and LaFayette Ford donated $46,000 to renovate two radiology rooms in the FTCC Dental Hygiene Lab. The renovation of the radiology rooms will have a lasting impact on the dental hygiene program.

These generous donations have been instrumental in providing FTCC’s dental hygiene students with the tools and facilities they need to succeed in their education and future careers. The support from Lewis Family Dentistry, the Price family and LaFayette Ford underscores the strong community partnerships that help drive the success of FTCC's programs.

The dental division holds community outreach service activities, including an annual Youth Community Dental Health Fair and a twice-yearly “Light Up the World: Smiles Event.”

About 300 children have been served at the three Youth Community Dental Health Fairs since they began in fall 2022. These fairs target elementary school students in Cumberland County. Funding is provided by United Way’s Youth Growth Stock Trust, totaling approximately $27,000.

The “Light Up the World: Smiles Event” is held each semester by second-year dental hygiene students and targets preschoolers through adolescent age groups. All participants receive free hygiene services, including dental prophylaxis, fluoride, bitewings, panoramic radiographs and/or sealants. Since fall 2021, these events have provided the following free services to children of the community: 113 prophies, 110 fluoride treatments, 57 panoramic radiographs, 61 bitewing radiographs and 339 sealants.

The dental program appreciates the help of FTCC Foundation in working with these generous donors.

FTCC has also expanded its dental continuing education curriculum by partnering with the American Dental Association and offering the Community Dental Health Coordinator Certification course. This certification course was added in Fall 2024 and will be offered to interested dental personnel every August at FTCC. The first cohort is scheduled to graduate four students in March 2025. The certification course will take approximately 10 months to complete, is fully online and will provide 286 continuing education credits upon completion.
