Purpose

A generous commitment from the American College of Dentists (ACD) to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) has established the ADEA/American College of Dentists Dr. Jerome Bright Miller Scholars in the ADEA Leadership Institute. These scholarships provide two current active Fellows of the ACD the opportunity to participate in the ADEA Leadership Institute.

The scholarships are in memory of Dr. Jerome Bright Miller, who was widely known for his extraordinary record of accountable leadership in dentistry. Throughout his life, Dr. Miller championed educational and leadership opportunities for legions of individuals through the Jerome B. Miller Family Foundation.

Dr. Miller was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and Baylor College of Dentistry, and he led at every level of his professional life and devoted considerable time and personal resources to perfecting his leadership style. He was a Past President of the College of Diplomates, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry; the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry; the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation; the Southwest Society of Pediatric Dentistry; the Oklahoma Dental Association; the ACD; and the ACD Foundation. Dr. Miller spent 28 years as a Trustee for the Oklahoma Dental Association and was a five-time Board of Governors Dental Specialty Board Examiner. For eight consecutive years, he served with distinction as a Trustee for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. For 20 years, he dutifully served as a delegate to the American Dental Association. Dr. Miller delivered over 75 presentations to various dental meetings and educational groups throughout the United States and was the principal author of over 45 articles in dental journals or related publications.

Overview

The Dr. Jerome Bright Miller Scholars each receive a $6,000 stipend for tuition and fees for their participation in the ADEA Leadership Institute, with the goal of preparing for a leadership position in academic dentistry.

Two scholarships will be awarded to two dental educators.

Eligibility Requirements

An applicant must:

  • Be a current active Fellow of the American College of Dentists.
  • Demonstrate recognizable leadership potential.
  • Be an ADEA Individual Member.

The applicant for the scholarships must submit the ADEA Leadership Institute’s application materials in a timely manner, be selected to attend the ADEA Leadership Institute, and have his or her dean’s support to cover the costs of participating in the ADEA Leadership Institute above the amount of the award.

Application Process Checklist

Using the ADEA online application process, applicants must submit an application by Sept. 19, 2024 for the ADEA Leadership Institute and indicate an interest in being selected as one of the ADEA/American College of Dentists Dr. Jerome Bright Miller Scholars in the ADEA Leadership Institute.

The ADEA Leadership Institute application requires the following:

  1. Two letters of recommendation from professional colleagues.
  2. A signed letter of recommendation from the dean of the applicant’s dental school, stating how the applicant’s participation will benefit the applicant and institution.
  3. A current curriculum vitae.

The dean of the applicant’s dental school agrees to pay the fellow’s full salary and benefits during the scholarship year and to support the fellow’s travel and personal expenses associated with participation in the ADEA Leadership Institute, including airfare, ground transportation, lodging and meals.

Notification Date and Award Announcement

Scholarship recipients and applicants not receiving awards will be notified by Dec. 12, 2024.

Awards will be announced during the 2025 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition, March 8–11, 2025, in National Harbor, MD.
