New Thinking

As ADEA approached its 100th anniversary, we turned our attention to the next 100 years by launching the New Thinking for the New Century (NTNC) initiative in 2021.

The goal of this initiative was to identify solutions to some of the chronic and emerging challenges facing dental education, while supporting the development of the next generation of leaders for dental education.

The desired outcomes for this effort included:

  • Increase member engagement and build community by bringing ADEA members together to identify up to three critical issues facing dental education, make collective sense of them, and work together to solve these shared challenges.
  • Develop the next generation of leaders for dental education through tapping the creative minds of progressive and contemporary thinking dental educators who can set the future in motion.
  • Develop plans and recommendations to address the specific issues facing dental education identified in the process.

ADEA NTNC Subcommittee Reports

The NTNC Steering Committee engaged ADEA's membership to identify the critical challenges facing the future of dental education.

Based on the input from the ADEA membership, the NTNC Steering Committee identified these three domains for the Initiative to explore and address through Subcommittees:

☛ Faculty and staff recruitment,
☛ Leadership development and succession planning and
☛ Preparing students for the future of collaborative practice.

Through their work in this initiative, the Subcommittees developed problem statements that clearly defined the problems to be addressed in their domain and provided their recommended actional solutions to these problems in the subcommittee reports.
