After the opening plenary session by Michelle Rozen, Ph.D., M.D., “The Change Doctor”, who will discuss “Building a Culture of Excellence: Excellence Isn’t Optional”, attendees can make their way to the “ADEA Chair of the Board of Directors Symposium: The Courage to Inspire and Empower” in Woodrow Wilson A, Ballroom Level, at 10:30 a.m.

This symposium will explore the four types of courage, and the significance of each to the future of oral health education and care through the experiences of five academic leaders:

  • Karl Haden, Ph.D., FACD
President and CEO, Academy for Advancing Leadership (AAL)
  •
  • Marnie Oakley, D.M.D.
Dean, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine
  •
  • Carlos Smith, D.D.S., M.Div.
Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence, Ethics and Community Engagement, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry

After hearing presentations from the panel, attendees will be able to identify the core concepts of courage and how they apply to overcoming fear and uncertainty; describe how to become a more courageous agent of change; and assess, by fostering communication, collaboration and shared responsibility, how to address tomorrow’s challenges in oral health education.
