Empowerment, Compassion and Forward-thinking Vision Will Be Discussed at the Tapestry Table Plenary and Chair of the Board of Directors Symposia
The Tapestry Table Plenary and ADEA Chair of the Board of Directors Symposium series sessions on Monday, March 10, will cover a wide range of topics from showing compassion to patients with disabilities to envisioning and transforming the future of oral health.
The “Monday Plenary/ Tapestry Table: Beyond Words: Insights Into More Compassionate Practices” will take place from 8:30 – 9:45 a.m. in Potomac Ballroom A&B, Ballroom Level. It will feature a presentation by Elizabeth Bonker, Executive Director of Communication 4 ALL, a nonprofit with the mission to gain communication for the more than 30 million non-speakers with autism worldwide. Bonker, who is affected by autism, learned to type on a letterboard at age five and, later, on a keyboard.
After the Tapestry Table at 10:30 a.m., the “ADEA Chair of the Board of Directors Symposium: Envision Tomorrow, Empower Tomorrow, Transform Tomorrow” will take place in Woodrow Wilson A, Ballroom Level (Hotel Side). In this symposium, members of the Task Force on Envisioning and Transforming the Future of Oral Health & Education, which was launched by ADEA in 2024, will share their working concept of ideal oral health for the future and the process behind it.
Later, at 1:30 p.m., also in Woodrow Wilson A, Ballroom Level (Hotel Side), the “ADEA Chair of the Board of Directors Symposium: Women in Dental Education: Maximizing the Power of Your Voice” will take place. This symposium will provide highlights of the 2024 ADEA International Women’s Leadership Conference and speak to the importance of a collective voice to provide recommendations for how our institutions and dental profession can support transformative change for the advancement of women.

Discover Trends in Dental School Faculty Post-COVID
Explore how much faculty at U.S. dental schools has changed since 2018-19 at the technical session, “Trends in the Workforce: How Has U.S. Dental School Faculty Fared Since the pre-COVID-19 Pandemic,” today, at 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. in Baltimore 1, Ballroom Level (Hotel Side).
The presentation will start by presenting the results of research on the trends in U.S. dental schools’ faculty, including changes in opened positions, lost positions, new and separated faculty, employment status, administrative roles, academic rank and demographics. This is an analysis based on the 2018-19 and 2022-23 ADEA Dental School Faculty Census. Following this presentation, faculty from around the country will provide their perspectives about the changes happening in the dental school faculty and how we should prepare for current and future challenges.

Celebrate Excellence in Dental Education at the 2025 William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation and Achievement
Celebrate monumental achievements in dental education by attending the Gies Awards Celebration at 6 p.m. today, in Potomac Ballroom A&B, Ballroom Level at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.

This ticketed event will acknowledge the accomplishments of the four 2025 Gies Award recipients
George Haddad, M.S., Founder of Liaison International, will receive the Gies Award for Eminence in Innovation for transforming the oral health and health professions enrollment management landscape and bringing exceptional impact and value to dental education.
Mr. Haddad and Liaison International have created innovations that have helped strengthen the application system for oral health education applicants and for schools, colleges and programs across the United States and around the globe.
Cecile A. Feldman, D.M.D., M.B.A., Dean at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, will receive the Gies Award for Eminence in Vision and Leadership. Dr. Feldman pursues excellence in leadership and has had decades of measurable impact on academic dentistry, oral health education and research.
Her vision and leadership are demonstrated through her academic and business acumen, deep commitment to the future of dental education and ability to energize and bring people together to move the profession forward.
Lois K. Cohen, Ph.D., Paul G. Rogers Ambassador for Global Health Research at Paul G. Rogers Society for Global Health Research, will receive the Gies Award for Eminence in Achievement.
Dr. Cohen, a distinguished sociologist and health science administrator, has made profound contributions to global oral health over her 60-year career. Her career exemplifies a lifelong dedication to advancing global oral health through interdisciplinary research, advocacy and leadership.
Dennis A. Mitchell, D.D.S., M.P.H., Interim Dean; Professor of Dental Medicine (Community Health and Periodontics at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, will receive the Gies Award for Eminence in Achievement.
Dr. Mitchell is an extraordinary steward of academic achievement, specifically regarding interprofessional education in the allied dental community, developing innovative academic programs and focusing on paving diverse and inclusive pathway programs to generate future leaders in health care education.
