Student Diversity Leadership Program

ADEA Student Diversity Leadership Program

The ADEA Student Diversity Leadership Program (ADEA SDLP) brings together dental and allied students from across the United States and Canada in support of partnerships for action, dialogue and collaboration at the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition.

Thank you to The Procter & Gamble Company for their sponsorship of the 2024 ADEA SDLP program.

ADEA SDLP assists participants in the development of leadership skills so that they can better serve as leaders of inclusive excellence within their dental schools and allied programs and engage fully in a culturally competent complex global society. The program is interactive and dental students walk away with individualized leadership plans. These plans assist ADEA SDLP participants in creating goals and accessing resources that allow them to further develop their leadership styles and build upon their strengths.

ADEA SDLP participants explore advocacy and the importance of their voices in helping address the oral healthcare needs of underserved communities. ADEA SDLP also provides programming in developing mentor and sponsor relationships and creating a culture that supports one’s own well-being as a dental professional.

The ADEA SDLP components include:

  • Professional development and learning opportunities for students, offered by the ADEA Access, Diversity and Inclusion portfolio;
  • Active engagement around topics of effective ethical leadership, problem-solving, and developing mentor and sponsor relationships
  • Development of an individualized leadership plan and resources.
  • Exploration of leadership issues related to inclusive excellence, oral health disparities, and serving underresourced communities
  • Avenues for supporting and fostering self-care, balance, and well-being.

2025 ADEA Student Diversity Leadership Program

The 2025 ADEA Student Diversity Leadership Program will be a day and a half event at the 2025 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in National Harbor, MD.

The program is for emerging student leaders from various backgrounds who have an interest in and a commitment to issues impacting a wide array of communities. The 2025 ADEA SDLP will focus thematically on dentistry’s role and responsibility in engaging public health emergency preparedness to anticipate and mitigate harm and advance health equity. Students will consider how the future of oral health can be guided by community engagement and justice.

Participants will engage in various presentations and activities to explore concepts of public health emergency preparedness from a variety of perspectives, with an emphasis on oral health care. Additionally, participants will consider the role of government and policy and the impact of social media on responses to and awareness of local, national and global health and oral health crises. At the end of the ADEA SDLP, participants will learn about the effects of disasters on oral health and dentistry and the relationships between community, ethics, justice and care.

Registration Process

Dental school deans and allied dental program directors are asked to support their students’ travel, lodging and ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition registration.

The target audiences for the ADEA SDLP are historically underrepresented and marginalized students in oral health education and/or students with an interest in advancing a humanistic and inclusive environment and health equity within their dental schools or allied dental programs, and serving vulnerable populations within their schools and communities.

Students who have never participated in the ADEA SDLP are preferred, although we leave the final registration decision to the discretion of the dental school deans and allied dental program directors.
