Program Spotlight: College of Southern Nevada

The College of Southern Nevada Dental Assisting curriculum has included innovative technologies to give the students a higher level of education to better prepare them for careers in dentistry.

Thanks to a Perkins grant, the program purchased a 3D printer, digital intraoral scanner and modern radiograph machines for four rooms.

The digital scanning allows for more accurate impression capture without requiring manual retakes. The students have a positive experience with accuracy and efficiency thanks to technology.

A 3D printer can create crown and bridge models, surgical implant guides, splints and occlusal guards is included with the scanner. The 3D printer works with the digital scanner and can produce a product in the office sooner than if sent to a lab to be created days to weeks later.

New radiograph machines with rectangular and round collimators were ordered and installed for student use. These new radiograph units are similar to those out in the dentistry field, providing the students an experience using technology they possibly may see at future jobs.

In 2019, the program added a new course that includes volunteering and community service. Many opportunities for teaching oral health care to those in need in Southern Nevada are available and the students gain so much from the experience. Partnerships include the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Dental School’s annual Give Kids A Smile, Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps, local elementary schools, and many other opportunities to learn about helping others in the dental field.

The College of Southern Nevada Dental Assisting Program ranks very high with the dentists operating within the area. The feedback from externship sites has been positive, and they are thankful the program provides them with qualified staff members for their office.

With a combined 39 years of experience in dentistry, Patricia Clark, the Program Director and full-time instructor, and Michelle Vargas, the program’s newest instructor, continuously work together to provide the students the best instruction possible.

Graduates of the Dental Assisting Program are prepared for the evolving societal demands and health care delivery system. With these new improvements, the community will have access to dental assistants who have received extensive training and will be ready for an externship then a career.
