MedEdPORTAL™ and ADEA invite educators to submit stand-alone teaching or learning modules that have been tested in the classroom or preclinical laboratory, or clinic educational materials that aim to improve patient care. The learners must include training or practicing physicians or dentists (e.g., professional school, residency, faculty development, continuing professional development) and may include trainees or practitioners across the health professions.
The vision of MedEdPORTAL is to:
- Serve as the premier clearinghouse of high-quality, peer-reviewed health education tools;
- Promote interprofessional collaboration by facilitating the open exchange of educational resources across the health professions; and
- Equip health professionals across the continuum with effective and efficient educational resources to improve patient care.
Special Collections
In addition to general submissions focused on dental and medical education, MedEdPORTAL invites authors to submit their works for publication to the following Special Collection:
Call for Submissions: Emerging Didactic and Clinical Technologies in Dental Education Collection
The number of emerging technologies that have the potential to improve educational delivery and patient care in dental medicine is expanding at a rapid rate. Academic dentistry should be leading efforts in this area to advance clinically focused teaching and promote research into innovations intended to improve patient outcomes. Examples include genomic dental medicine, artificial intelligence, 3D printing, advanced diagnostic technologies, classroom learning technologies, virtual reality, computer-assisted design/computer-assisted manufacturing, robotics, digital treatment planning, emerging technologic approaches to disease diagnosis and management, biomaterial engineering, and electronic health record advances. Incorporating these emerging didactic and clinical technologies into the classroom is critical to the education of future dentists.
For questions related to this Call for Submissions, please contact Paul C. Edwards, D.D.S., M.Sc., MedEdPORTAL Associate Editor, at pcedward@iu.edu.
Call for Submissions: Telehealth Education Diversity, Inclusion, and Health Equity Collection
MedEdPORTAL’s Diversity, Inclusion, and Health Equity Collection, in co-sponsorship with ADEA, features peer-reviewed educational resources for educators to advance institutional efforts in creating a diverse and inclusive culture and climate for all in order to drive clinical, educational, research and service excellence.
Featured MedEdPORTAL Publications
Highlights of recent MedEdPORTAL publications of interest to the dental education community. These resources, selected by the MedEdPORTAL Associate Editor for ADEA, Paul C. Edwards D.D.S., M.Sc., cover a range of topics published as stand-alone teaching or learning modules that have been implemented and evaluated in health education settings.
Using the Timmer Scale to Standardize Pediatric Dentistry Residents’ Scientific Appraisal Skills
Samah Omar, D.D.S., M.S.D., Janet Bauer, D.D.S., M.S.Ed., M.S.P.H., M.B.A., Afsaneh Matin, D.D.S., Amanjyot Bians, M.A.S., Jung-Wei Chen, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., Monica Ocampo
Advanced education programs commonly use a journal club format to enhance residents’ ability to critically assess the applicability of current and historical literature to patient care. The authors detail their use of a 19-question validated assessment tool originally designed to assess the quality of abstracts, the Timmer scale, to improve residents’ ability to systematically assess articles in a journal club setting. This educational module includes the full complement of resources needed to implement this process in an advanced dental education program, including PowerPoint slide decks outlining the process and quality assessment score sheets.
Tools for Responding to Patient-Initiated Verbal Sexual Harassment: A Workshop for Trainees and Faculty
Lauren E. Hock, M.D., Patrick B. Barlow, Ph.D., Brittni A. Scruggs, M.D., Ph.D., Thomas A. Oetting, M.D., M.S., Denise A. Martinez, M.D., Michael D. Abràmoff, M.D., Ph.D., Erin M. Shriver, M.D.
In many institutions, health care trainees receive minimal training on managing gender-based discrimination and verbal harassment initiated by patients. The authors developed a workshop consisting of an interactive lecture followed by role-play scenarios to better prepare residents and faculty to respond to patient-initiated verbal harassment toward themselves and others. The module includes a slide deck, a harassment toolkit with succinct guidelines for both health care trainees and attending faculty and a detailed facilitator guide to implement the workshop at your institution.
Everyday Resilience: Equipping Faculty With Practical Exercises to Promote Resilience Among Medical Students
Galina Gheihman, M.D., Tara A. Singh, M.D., Cynthia A. Cooper, M.D., Bri Anne McKeon, M.D., David A. Hirsh, M.D., Arabella L. Simpkin, M.A., B.M.B.Ch., MRCPCH, M.M.Sc.
Among students in the health care professions, higher levels of resiliency, defined as the ability to cope effectively in the face of adversity, is associated with improved perceptions of their quality of life and educational environment, lower levels of distress and reduced risk of professional burnout. The authors developed a “train-the-trainer” workshop aimed at teaching faculty two skills-based exercises for increasing resilience among medical students: “Breaking Down Easy,” which focuses on teaching individuals to identify personal strengths, and “My Resilience Practice,” helping individuals identify strategies to cope with daily stressors. This educational module includes a complete PowerPoint slide deck, worksheets for implementing the two resilience exercises and a detailed instructor guide for running a faculty training workshop.
MedEdPORTAL is a peer-reviewed journal of teaching and learning resources in the health professions published by the Association of American Medical Colleges, in partnership with the American Dental Education Association.
