University of British Columbia FOD Celebrates Teaching Excellence

The faculty and teaching assistants at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry (UBC Dentistry) have always been a great point of pride for the school. The trend of educational excellence continues through what has been a challenging year for teachers and students alike. Faculty have not only had to rapidly modify academic programs, clinical operations, and research, but also pivot to online teaching—being continuously conscious of student support and unique challenges.

UBC Dentistry is proud to recognize three outstanding educators: HsingChi von Bergmann, M.Sc., Ph.D.; Adriana Manso D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D.; and Abiola Adeniyi Ph.D., who have recently received prestigious teaching awards.

Dr. von Bergmann received UBC’s most prestigious teaching honor, the Killam Teaching Prize. The Killam Teaching Prize is awarded to faculty members who are nominated by students, colleagues and alumni in recognition of their teaching excellence. Dr. von Bergmann has received this award for her transformative impact on teaching and learning at an institutional, disciplinary and societal level.

Dr. Adeniyi has been awarded a Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in recognition of the valuable role that Teaching Assistants play in our programs. This award is given to only 16 teaching assistants across all Faculties at UBC each year. This award reflects a high level of respect from her undergraduate students and academic supervisors.

Dr. Manso is a recipient of the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry (ACFD) W.W. Wood Awards for Excellence in Dental Education. One ACFD W.W. Wood Award for Excellence in Dental Education is awarded each year, in each Canadian Faculty of Dentistry, to a faculty member who has completed at least three years of teaching in a Canadian Faculty of Dentistry. This award is a tribute to Dr. Manso’s dedication to research, teaching and service to the UBC Dentistry Community.

These are just three of UBC Dentistry’s incredible dynamic academic leaders. The Faculty is incredibly proud of their achievements, and commitment to ongoing teaching excellence at UBC Dentistry.
