The University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry (UBC Dentistry) takes great pride in a long history of academic and research excellence. That tradition carries on today as they recognize two outstanding members of the UBC Dentistry community. Adriana Manso, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., and Mr. Imran Mitha, Class of 2021, were both honored as winners of two prestigious Colgate awards.

Mr. Mitha’s case study was selected as one of only two winners of the Whole Mouth Health Colgate Award, an award for Canadian D.M.D. students in their fourth year of study. Case studies were evaluated on the thoroughness of dental evaluation and treatment plan, consideration of cultural and socio-economic factors, preventive evaluation and recommendations, and patient outcomes. The award recognizes Mr. Mitha’s clinical case study as one of the best among all Canadian dental schools. He was awarded $2,500 for his outstanding submission

Dr. Manso was awarded one of five Colgate Awards for Research Excellence (CARE). Dr. Manso’s project, titled Novel Multifunctional Curcumin-based Adhesive Varnish for Caries Control, was reviewed by an independent, esteemed group of senior academic dental researchers. The winners were chosen based on program criteria including innovation, clinical significance, originality and scientific quality. This year, Dr. Manso was the only Canadian university recipient of a CARE award.

The CARE program recognizes a new generation of academic researcher, fostering the development of early career faculty by providing a one-year research grant with the goal of advancing oral health therapies in the realms of basic science, translational science and clinical care. Dr. Manso’s project received $30,000 USD in research funding for June 1, 2021–May 31, 2022.
