At the
University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry (UBC Dentistry), the past year and a half has been full of diverse challenges, adversity and uncertainty. Daily life for UBC Dentistry staff, students and faculty was thrown into turmoil at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many more questions than answers. However, it was a storm that the school weathered with outstanding resilience and grace.
UBC Dentistry is unique, having one of the only programs with a hybrid of virtual instruction and in-person clinical operations. The school is looking forward to welcoming our Class of 2025 cohort in-person this year and transitioning staff and faculty back to campus.
As British Columbia (B.C.) prepares to enter “Step 4” of the B.C. Restart Plan, and faculty and students are waiting and looking forward to the time when they can learn and work together in person again, they have remained hard at work despite the current restrictions.
Recently, Riki Gottleib, D.M.D., M.S., FAGD and incoming D.M.D. Class of 2025 student Eshan Jozaghi, M.A., Ph.D., were honored to be published in the Journal of Dental Education.
Their guest editorial, titled “
The impact of COVID-19 on dental school admissions: A student and faculty perspective,” explores the adjustments that needed to be made to admissions procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the perceived impact that these changing procedures had on potential students and selection committees. They also discuss recommendations for the process moving forward.
UBC Dentistry would like to celebrate and commend the faculty, students and staff for their commitment to the school’s academic and research mission and fortitude during one of the most unprecedented times the Faculty, and the world has ever seen.
